Limitations on subdiffraction imaging with a negative refractive index slab

چکیده
A planar slab of material, for which both the permittivity and permeability have the values of 21, can bring not only the propagating fields associated with a source to a focus, but can also refocus the nonpropagating near fields, thereby achieving resolution beyond the diffraction limit. We study the sensitivity of this subwavelength focus to the slab material properties and periodicity, and note the connection to slab surface plasmon modes. We conclude that significant subwavelength resolution is achievable with a single negative index slab, but only over a restrictive range of parameters. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1554779#

Achieving subdiffraction imaging through bound surface states in negative refraction photonic crystals in the near-infrared range.
We report the observation of imaging beyond the diffraction limit due to bound surface states in negative refraction photonic crystals. We achieve an effective negative index figure of merit [-Re(n)/Im(n)] of at least 380, approximately 125x improvement over recent efforts in the near-infrared range, with a 0.4 THz bandwidth. Supported by numerical and theoretical analyses, the observed near-fi...
متن کاملPhysics of negative refractive index materials
In the past few years, new developments in structured electromagnetic materials have given rise to negative refractive index materials which have both negative dielectric permittivity and negative magnetic permeability in some frequency ranges. The idea of a negative refractive index opens up new conceptual frontiers in photonics. One much-debated example is the concept of a perfect lens that e...
متن کاملNegative refractive index characteristics of a uniaxial anisotropic μ-negative slab
Negative refractive index characteristics of a uniaxial anisotropic slab with a negative component of the permeability tensor are first confirmed. A two-dimensional array of metallic spirals is fabricated on a dielectric substrate and the wave propagation guided by the structure is measured by near-field measurements at 4.5 GHz band. The ω-β relation is obtained by the measured phase distributi...
متن کاملHighly Directive Radiation and Negative Refraction Using Photonic Crystals
In this article, we present an experimental and numerical study of certain optical properties of twodimensional dielectric photonic crystals (PCs). By modifying the band structure of a two-dimensional photonic crystal through its crystal parameters, we show how it is possible to confine the angular distribution of radiation from an embedded omnidirectional source. We then demonstrate that the a...

A two-dimensional photonic-crystal engineered to possess a refractive index equal to minus one at a certain frequency is used as a flat superlens. Subwavelength imaging (image size below half a wavelength) is observed both in the near-field and far-field regimes when the interface with air is properly terminated to support surface states with even
